Meet Our Owner: How Steve Baillie's Experience Prepares Our Shop for Complex Work
Baillie Fabricating & Welding has been in business for 31 years now, but our owner, Steve Baillie, has been in the manufacturing industry for even longer. Those decades of work fixing, building, and adapting have shaped the shop we are today. Steve’s experience directly shaped our ability to help you solve problems in everything from product development to sheet metal fabrication.
A Background Built on Resourcefulness
Steve grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania, where repairing vehicles and equipment was simply part of daily life. That environment taught him to diagnose issues quickly, make smart modifications, and work with the resources available. And these habits still guide how he approaches customer projects.
Steve excelled in shop class in high school, and moved into a job at a heavy trucking equipment company. He started as a mechanic, but quickly put his metal manufacturing background to work in helping to manufacture truck equipment customized to customer applications. Custom work required design, and that’s where Steve developed skills that are reflected today in our CAD modeling services and design support.
He rose through the ranks and eventually managed a fabrication shop for the company, ultimately deciding to strike out on his own.
From On-Site Repairs to a Full Fabrication Shop
In its earliest years, Baillie Fabricating & Welding was primarily road service. Steve would perform welding services at construction or job sites and conduct repairs on heavy equipment. After about a decade of road service, the company transitioned to primarily in-house services as a metal fabrication company, adding more equipment and processes. (But that road-service mindset never completely left: we still offer on-site services.)
Adapting with the Industry
Our growth hasn’t followed a straight line, and that adaptability is intentional. When we see a consistent need, we work to meet it with the right equipment and processes.
In the 2000s, for instance, we handled a wide variety of CNC shape cutting projects with a plasma table. As we began taking on more pharmaceutical work, we recognized our existing setup wasn’t the best match for pharmaceutical-grade expectations, so we added laser cutting services. It remains a core capability of our shop today.
Evolving Capabilities, Driven by Customer Needs
As our customer base expanded, our capabilities evolved. Early on, we focused mainly on aluminum and carbon steel. Today, for fine-finish applications such as food packaging, we more frequently handle precision stainless steel fabrication that comes with higher surface-quality expectations.
Continuous learning has been a defining theme for both Steve and the shop. He says he often comes back to two topics when considering how to grow next:
“I always look at two things,” said Steve. “First, what do our customers need? And second, how can we serve that need efficiently in this market?”
Problem Solving: Product Development, Reverse Engineering, and Beyond
Because we’ve supported a wide range of industries over the years, we’re often brought in when a job needs more than straightforward fabrication. Customers come to us for practical problem solving, in both design and complex fabrication.
It takes a variety of forms. For instance, we help develop the ideas and designs for new products, like our Door Repair Bracket and Fuel Shield. We also handle reverse engineering, retrofit, and replacement work for legacy equipment.
As Steve puts it: “People come to us with problems because they know we’ll have unique ideas for solutions. They’ll tell us their issue, and trust that our experience will allow us to find an answer.”
Managing and Leading: Empowering Employees
Steve has learned a lot since his first management position at the trucking company. He believes strongly in a measured approach to growth, for instance; overinvestment in equipment can leave the shop in a precarious position, while too many employees can leave team members adrift. And he believes above all in giving team members as many tools as possible to succeed.
Steve always aims to have versatile, cross-trained employees. The shop’s goal is to be team-oriented, with well-rounded people who can step up when needed and adapt to the latest project and goals. And since taking over HR, Steve’s wife, Tammy Baillie, has been critical to efficient employee arrangements and keeping staffing organized.
